What is a Lector? Lectors are entrusted with the crucial task of making the word of God come alive by proclaiming it to the parish. This role is a joy and honor for those who undertake the responsibility. Proclamation of the Holy Word can be a powerful way of engaging the parish in the wonderful mystery of the Mass.
The Lector “Proclaims” the Word, rather than “Reads.” To proclaim, the Lector reflects upon, knows and understands the readings before stepping up to the Ambo.
There are two lectors scheduled for each mass. The First Reader reads the Mass announcements and proclaims the First Reading. The Second Reader proclaims the Second Reading, and reads the Prayers of the Faithful if a Deacon is not present at Mass.
