One way we pray for people in need, both the living and the dead (canon 945 §1), is by having a Mass said for that person. Pope Paul VI said, "The Mass is the most perfect form of prayer, " and is said in communion with the enire Universal Church. Mass intentions are a great treasure of the Church and have a spirtual weight that is incalculable.
An offering is given freely, by the faithful, primarily out of their concern for the Church and their desire to support its material needs. The Christian faithful who give an offering to apply the Mass for their intention contribute to the good of the Church, and by that offering share its concert to support its ministers and works (Canon 946).
